I
t has been called one of the
most historic presidential elec-
tions in our nation’s history
— Barack Obama versus John
McCain. It is a race that pits the
iconoclast against the newcomer, the
heroic prisoner of war against the
first African American nominated by
a major party. FRONTLINE’s criti-
cally acclaimed series “The Choice”
returns this election season to ex-
amine the rich personal and politi-
cal biographies of these two men in
“The Choice 2008,” airing Tuesday,
October 14, 2008, 8:00-10:00 p.m. on
K W BU-T V.
“The Choice 2008,” part of “PBS Vote
2008” election coverage, draws on in-
depth interviews with the advisers,
family and friends closest to these
unlikely candidates, as well as with
seasoned observers of American
p o l i t i c s , w h o t o g e t h e r t e l l t h e d e f i n i t i v e
story of these men and their ascent to
their party’s nominations.
When FRONTLINE first aired a profile
of presidential candidates during the
1988 election, “The Choice” redefined
political journalism on television.
Now, in an unprecedented election
year, veteran FRONTLINE producer
Michael Kirk goes behind the headlines
to tell a deeper political story about
the candidates, the decisions they
made and why their nominations may
indicate a historic change in American
politics.
The story begins at the Democratic
Convention in 2004 when Barack
Obama, a little-known candidate for
the U.S. Senate from Illinois, stepped
forward to tell his personal story and
to call for a move beyond partisan
politics.
Also that summer, the future
Republican nominee John McCain, a
self-described maverick and sometime
adversary of the Bush administration,
took the stage at his party’s convention
to defend the president’s national
security policy. In an effort to win
the support of his party, the longtime
senator from Arizona had decided to
try to walk a fine line — a line he’d had
trouble walking all his life — between
being an unconventional outsider and
a team player.
FRONTLINE follows the two
candidates from deep inside their
campaigns as they run the gauntlet
of the 2008 primary. With the race
narrowed to two men America is
truly at a crossroads: historic lows
in the public’s confidence in our
country’s future; a battered incumbent
overseeing an unpopular war in Iraq;
a faltering economy as gasoline prices
soar.

A mathematical genius takes a wild ride through the boundless
paranoia of a surveillance society on “The Last Enemy,” a ve-
part thriller set in England in the not-too-distant future. Scripted
by award-winning writer Peter Berry (“Prime Suspect 6: The
Last Witness”), “The Last Enemy” launches the rst season of
MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY. The series airs Sundays,
October 5, 2008, 8:00-9:30 p.m. and October 12-November 2, 2008,
8:00-9:00 p.m. on KWBU-TV.
Biometric ID cards, ubiquitous security cameras and “Total
Information Awareness,” a program to give authorities unlimited
access to personal data, have turned Britain into a virtual police
state. And it turns out that Big Brother has even bigger plans for
keeping track of citizens.
An expatriate mathematician returns to England to nd the nation
transformed into a hyper-paranoid surveillance society, plagued
by terrorists, fugitives and spies. Searching for the truth about his
brother’s mysterious death, he is catapulted into an international
conspiracy — and a passionate love affair with his brother’s widow.
The ve-part thriller stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, “To
the Ends of the Earth”) as Stephen Ezard, Anamaria Marinca (4
Months, 3 Weeks, & 2 Days) as the enigmatic and beautiful sister-
in-law Yasim and Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, Trainspotting) as
rogue agent David Russell.

Goode, who recently
starred in the feature
lm Brideshead Revisited
and has appeared in My
Family and Other Animals,
The Inspector Lynley
Mysteries and Miss Marple
on MASTERPIECE, will make his hosting debut with the season
opener “The Last Enemy.”
One of Hollywood’s most sought after actors, Goode starred in
Woody Allen’s Match Point and Scott Frank’s The Lookout before
taking on the role of Charles Ryder in Julian Jarrold’s Brideshead
Revisited. He will next be seen as super villain Adrian Veidt/
Ozymandias in Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated Watchmen,
opening March 6, 2009.

nominated for a Lone Star EMMY
Award in the Documentary-
Cultural/Historical category.

Get Ready for Digital TV
Premieres Wednesday, October 1 at 8:00 p.m.
The television industry is approaching a historic
moment; on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, the nation’s
TV broadcasters will complete their transition to
an all-digital format. Digital television (DTV) is a
newer, more efcient, broadcast technology that
offers viewers dramatically clearer pictures and
better sound than the traditional analog system.
This change will affect millions of households that
only receive over-the-air signals, as well as those
that have secondary over-the-air TV sets in their
bedrooms and/or kitchens.
Viewers who do not subscribe to a paid cable or
satellite service and do not have a digital tuner
inside their television will need to take one of the three steps outlined below to continue watching TV after the
transition.
1. Purchase a TV set with a built-in digital tuner
2. Subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay TV service
3. Purchase a DTV converter box for your existing TV set
Digital-to-analog converter boxes receive digital over-the-air signals from your antenna, convert them to analog
and then send the signals to your existing analog television set. Through March 31, 2009, all U.S. households are
eligible to request up to two $40 government-sponsored coupons to off-set the price of the boxes, allowing viewers
to continue watching free over-the-air television on their older analog sets.
In a half-hour special, GET READY FOR DIGITAL TV, PBS has joined with THIS OLD HOUSE’s Norm Abram
and Kevin O’Connor, along with Maria Hinojosa, award-winning senior correspondent with NOW on PBS, to offer
digital television how-to guidance and tips to ensure that viewers
across America are prepared to successfully make the switch to
digital television in their homes before the analog shutoff in February
2009.
GET READY FOR DIGITAL TV will air on KWBU-TV during the
month of October at the following times:

October 18: Fabulous Festivals
We’re taking the party outside to celebrate the cultures of the world! Come with us as we travel from community to
community to take in the food, sights and sounds of festivals. Chef Jose Andres will have you dancing in the streets of
Spain and Chef Tina Nordstrom will travel back in time when she visits a medieval festival in Sweden. World travelers
Rick Steves and Burt Wolf will be trekking through Europe to seek out the best festivals. A lesson in history and culture
awaits us!
October 25: Trick or Treat
It’s that time of year again when all of the little ghosts and goblins (and their parents) are preparing for some autumn fun!
We’re picking pumpkins with lifestyle expert Sean Conway and planning a ghoulish Halloween party complete with
Shortbread Witches’ Fingers and Bloody Mary Soup with Chris Fennimore and Dede Wilson. No Halloween celebration
would be complete without costumes and Donna Erickson has got it covered – a sweat suit will be all that you need. The
tricks and treats are plentiful, be sure to tune in! The October 25 marathon, Trick or Treat will be replayed on Friday,
October 31.
