KWBU PROGRAM GUIDE 2
KWBU-TV Highlights
K
WBU-TV will air the new
Ken Burns documentary
series, THE NATIONAL
PARKS: AMERICA’S
BEST IDEA, Monday - Friday,
September 27 - October 2 at 7:00 p.m.,
with episodes repeating on the same
night they premiere. The entire series
will also repeat over the weekend
of October 3 - 4. The 12-hour, six-
part documentary series, directed
by Burns and co-produced with his
longtime colleague, Dayton Duncan,
who also wrote the script, is the
story of an idea as uniquely American
as the Declaration of Independence
and just as radical: that the most
special places in the nation should be
preserved, not for royalty or the rich,
but for everyone. As such, it follows
in the tradition of Burns’s exploration
of other American inventions, such as
baseball and jazz.
Filmed over the course of more than six
years in some of nature’s most spectacular
locales — from Acadia to Yosemite,
Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the
Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the
Arctic in Alaska — the documentary
is nonetheless a story of people from
every conceivable background: rich and
poor; famous and unknown; soldiers
and scientists; natives and newcomers;
idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people
who were willing to devote themselves to
saving some precious portion of the land
they loved, and in doing so, reminded
their fellow citizens of the full meaning of
democracy.
The narrative traces the birth of the
national park idea in the mid-1800s and
follows its evolution for nearly 150 years.
Using archival photographs, rst-person
accounts of historical characters, personal
memories and analysis from more than
40 interviews, and what Burns believes
is the most stunning cinematography in
Florentine Films’ history and the most
contemporary footage of any Ken Burns
lm since LEWIS AND CLARK, the series
chronicles the steady addition of new
parks through the stories of the people
who helped create them and save them
from destruction. It is simultaneously a
biography of compelling characters and of
the American landscape.

Brazos Valley Public Broadcasting Foundation
Governing Board Feature: Dr. Karla Leeper
I support public broadcasting because it provides a space for truly independent and
original programming. In a complex world where so much of what the media offers us is
only a fragment of what we really need to know, public broadcasting gives us the breadth
and depth of information to be effective citizens of the twenty rst century. Whether
it is news, education or entertainment, public broadcasting expands our horizons. I am
proud to be a member of a KWBU team that is committed to nurturing such a tremendous
asset for the central Texas community.
Dr. Karla Leeper earned bachelor’s degrees in communication studies and political science
at the University of Iowa in 1985. She received a master’s degree and then a doctoral
degree in rhetoric and argumentation from the University of Kansas in 1993. Her areas of
research are political communication, and argumentation and public deliberation.
A member of the Baylor communication studies faculty since 1992, Leeper has served
Baylor in several positions, including associate professor and chair of the communication
studies department. As director of the award-winning Baylor debate program, she held The
Glenn R. Capp Endowed Chair in Forensics. She is a winner of the George Ziegelmueller
Award for excellence in directing forensics, the Donn W. Parson Outstanding Young
Forensics Educator Award and the National Federation of Interscholastic Speech and Debate Association Service Award.
Leeper has served as president of the American Forensics Association and chair of the National Debate Tournament
committee.
She is active in the Waco community, serving as the director of GEAR UP Wacos Project Democracy program and
participating as a facilitator in the City of Waco Visioning Project.

Saturday Marathons in September on Create TV
Spend your Saturdays with themed marathons
Create™ TV s Saturdays are lled with a full day of how-to programs focusing on a speci c
theme. Explore a country, from history to food. Prepare for a holiday, from traditions to recipes.
There’s a Create Saturday to t any lifestyle. See marathon descriptions below.
September 5: Goodbye Summer
Summer is coming to a close… But before we pack away our shorts and tank tops in the attic and put the barbecue
grill in the garage, let’s enjoy our favorite warm weather activities one last time. Taste the juicy fruits and vegetables
that summer yields with chefs Mary Ann Esposito and Caprial and John Spence. Feel the sun on your face when
you are on a picnic or at the beach with Katie Brown, Chris Kimball and Daisy Martinez. Get the last of the
summer fun before its gone!
September 12: Better with Butter
Whether you like a juicy steak, succulent seafood, a rich pastry, or popcorn; a dollop of butter makes them tastes
even better. Sample creamy Vermont butter with Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie host Lydia Shire, then watch Ming
Tsai add miso-butter sauce to scrumptious poached shrimp. You’ll nd out what our chefs have known for much
longer-food is simply better with butter.
September 19: The Great Outdoors
There’s a world of adventure to be found when you take a trip outside. We’ll visit vacation spots around the globe
that have unique and amazing things to do in the open air. Julie Conover of Passport to Adventure will take you
on a raft trip on the Ganges River, and then Darley Newman rides on horseback to ancient Mayan ruins in Belize.
Soon you’ll want to hitch a ride, sail the seas, and get away to the great outdoors.
September 26: Beats and Eats
When you have an empty stomach, let music be your guide. Youll be surprised at the fun and avorful meals a
lively tune can inspire. Mario Batali talks food and music with rocker Michael Stipe of the group R.E.M. Native
American chef, Lorette Oden chows down on Cajun gumbo in the bayou while a Zydeco band sets the mood.
There’s no better combo for making your stomach smile than beats and eats.
